Getting Things Done - the art of stress-free productivity

This is the second book that I have finish reading in this year. I received this book for free from a member of Beli Nothing Project . I was a bit dubious about it's practicality by judging it's title. How can getting things done be stress-free? I was blown away with what it could be offer the moment I started to read. It is so timely and the contents are validating my thoughts about productivity. I am currently in the situation where I was tasked to take up a portfolio of another colleague without any replacement and I have find myself drowned with a lot of mundane task since end of 2019. At the same time, COVID-19 strikes and flipping everything upside down. We were working from home and since then I had a lot of thoughts to do things, and I started to load myself up with all the things that I wanted to try out, and the wildest thing was started a Youtube channel and at the end I have put myself into the state of mental breakdown. Since then, I tried to empower myself to co...

Argument on a loaf of stale bread - Non-violent Communication by Marshall B Rosenberg

On 26 July, me and my family were shopping in a supermarket. My husband has suggested to buy the polo bun, I told him we still have the half loaf of bread in the refrigerator. Then he put down the polo bun. Afterwards he said he was hungry, I suggested him we find something to eat at the food court. But he said it would be a waste of money. On the way back home, he said he want to buy a burger. I told him let me make sandwich with the loaf of bread that we had. Then he said no need. He will make a cup of coffee. Then I said I will buy the burger for you. Then he said: “Let’s go back and eat your bread since you has been fussing about it”. After I heard him said I am fussy about the bread, I am so angry and my emotion start to boil. When I reached home, I threw a big tantrum and throw away the half loaf of bread and throw the plastic container to the floor loudly. I proceed to clean the toilet angrily and making a lot of noise. Afterwards I went to buy the burger my husband wants. Then ...

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century

This series of books by Yuval Harari discussed the history, present and future about human mankind. I am very grateful to have read this series of books as it helps me distill and reason my thoughts in a new light.. 1. Success is about what you have to offer and what the worlds needs, with luck. Hard work and nurture plays a role. But more often it is coincidence and luck. If you have the characteristics to survive in a dessert but born in the sea, you are doomed to death. We often see success as a biased retrospective study. You can ask Jack Ma how he become successful. But do you think the rest of the 7 billion people in the world, no one did what Jack Ma do? He is success because he did the thing he did at that particular period, at that particular circumstances. Neil Armstrong was remembered because he is the first one to step on the moon. Do you think his other crew member did less training or work less harder than him? 2. Nature allows, human made rule forbids. No body will give ...

The Matrix (1999 film)

Some thoughts about the movie. 1. In the movie, the agents are assigned as an individual entity. I think it is due to the fact in 1999 we are still limited with land line and the idea of "know it all" still not popular. With the current technology, and if all AI in the system as one entity, the rebellion will have no chance. Every step they made and everything they do will be under the system's data. 2. In one of the scene, the agent told Morpheus that he want his mission to end so that he don't need to stay in the system anymore. In this setting, the AI has consciousness that has human values. E.g. He feel his current situation as "non-ideal" therefore he has the need to end his mission and cease to exist. Since I am not an AI I will have no idea how AI's consciousness and world view will be. But I believe it will be different from mankind, as it do not need emotion to evaluate their actions or "output". I am imagining if human being has advan...

Forget a Mentor, Find a Sponsor: The New Way to Fast-track Your Career by Sylvia Ann Hewlett

Everyone knows the pre-requisite to be promoted, which is to put effort, be hardworking, and delivering results. Too often, our effort to deliver results set by superiors are seen as the ability to support the leader. This makes us stuck in our supportive role. Sometimes our action might be too subtle to our leaders and makes us missed our chances to be promoted. Usually we will turn to mentors for help, but the guidance provided is not the key for us to stand out. We need somebody to recognize us, and pulls us up. This person is a Sponsor. Mentor is a person that provides guidance and help to a junior. Mentor-ship is usually a one way giving process. A mentee does not necessary need to perform well to get help from mentors, and the guidance and advice is often considered as a gift. Comparing to mentor-ship, a good sponsorship will create a win-win situation, where the sponsor will get a person that delivers the support the sponsor need, while the protégée will receive the co...

The Marshmallow Test by Walter Mischel

The Marshmallow test, written by Walter Mischel, discussed about nuturing self-control that leads to other positive traits which are beneficial to our day to day encounters. The idea of Marshmallow test is portrayed by the video below - The waiting game by Sesame Street, where a group of children is presented with their favourite snack, if they are able to resist the temptation to indulge immediately and wait for the researcher to come back, they will be rewarded with another piece of snack. The result of the marshmallow test has become an indicator for their future life. For those who are able to wait for their reward, lives a more successful life, better social and cognitive functioning, a healthier lifestyle and greater sense of self-worth compare to those who can't wait.  There are a few ideas that Walter introduce in his book, which I find useful. 1. The brain is controlled by a Hot and Cool system. Activation of the cool system allow us to make better ...
